Superbacterium NDM found from a dog in Finland

University of Helsinki informs that so called super bacterium NDM-Escherichia coli has been found for the first time from an animal in Finland.

University of Helsinki reports that so called super bacterium NDM-Escherichia coli has been found from a dog in Finland. The dog was treated for ear infection with several types of antibiotics.

NDM-1 stands for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, which is an enzyme that destroys beta-lactam antibiotics including the penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems. Bacteria that express NDM-1 usually have other resistance factors. Most strains are resistant to all commonly used antibiotics.
